What is a winter pool cover?

A winter pool cover is a strong PVC sheet. It is stretched over the pool and anchored to the edge to protect the water during the months without swimming. It keeps leaves, dust and dirt out. It also covers the water, which slows the growth of algae. When you reopen the pool, the water is much cleaner and there is far less to treat.

It suits any swimming pool that spends months unused, at your home or at a second home in Spain. It is a seasonal protective cover. It is not a safety barrier and it is not a surface to walk on.

Material and colours

We make the cover from 580 g/m² PVC (the standard blue and black fabric; the other colours use a 610 g/m² fabric). The fabric is reinforced, treated against mildew and resistant to UV rays. The standard colour is blue and black: blue on the top face and black on the face that touches the water. You can choose white, beige, green, grey, brown or black instead, with a supplement per m² that the configurator calculates straight away.

Winter cover characteristics

• Material: polyester fabric coated with PVC.
• Weight: 580 g/m² for the standard blue and black fabric; 610 g/m² for the other colours.
• Treatment: mildew-resistant and UV-resistant.
• Tensile strength: 2,500 N/5 cm warp and 2,200 N/5 cm weft (values from the fabric's data sheet).
• Tear strength: 280 N warp and 250 N weft (values from the fabric's data sheet).
• Operating temperature: from −30 °C to +70 °C.
• Colours: blue on the top face and black on the face that touches the water as standard; to choose, with a supplement per m²: white, beige, green, grey, brown or black.
• Making up: cut from a 2.50 m wide roll; if the pool is wider, the strips are joined with a 3 cm overlap.
• Edges: 25 cm of overlap on each side over the stone and a 7 cm hem all round the perimeter.
• Eyelets: stainless steel, fitted along the edge of the cover.
• Anchor: two-piece, with a brass plug and a stainless-steel screw, one every 0.60 m of perimeter plus extra ones at the corners; it is included in the price.
• Drainage: at least 30 holes, included, so rain does not collect on top.
• Large pools: above 80 m² of cover it also carries a perimeter steel cable, mandatory and included in the price.

How it is measured and fitted

Measure the pool stone to stone, along the outer edge of the coping. The cover reaches you finished, with a 25 cm overlap on each side over the stone. That overlap is what holds it down. It is fixed with brass anchors, one every 0.60 m of perimeter and extra ones at the corners. The anchors are included in the price per m².

A winter cover is anchored in a fixed position, so it has no roller. The summer cover is the one that can have a roller: see our solar bubble covers.

Looking after your winter cover

• Put the cover on when the water is clean and treated. You will reopen with much less work.
• Now and then, remove the leaves and the water that collect on top. Do not walk on the cover.
• After a windstorm, check the anchors and the tension.
• In spring, clean it, let it dry and store it folded for the next winter.

Winter pool covers: common questions

When do I put the winter pool cover on?

When the swimming season ends and the pool is going to spend months without use. Before covering it, leave the water clean and treated. You will reopen in spring with far less work.

Is a winter cover the same as a solar bubble cover?

No. A winter cover is a PVC sheet that is anchored to the pool edge from autumn to spring. The solar bubble cover is the summer cover: it warms the water and slows evaporation. They do different jobs, and you can have just one of them or both.

How do I measure my pool for a winter cover?

Measure stone to stone, along the outer edge of the coping. We add 32 cm on each side to that measurement: 25 cm of overlap over the stone and 7 cm of hem, exactly as in the configurator.

Can I walk on the cover or use it as a safety cover?

No. It is a seasonal protective cover, not a surface to walk on and not a safety device.
