Winter pool cover: how to choose it and how it is fitted

The winter pool cover — also called a debris cover or pool cover for the winter — is a PVC sheet anchored to the edge of the pool to protect it from autumn to spring. This guide sums up what is worth knowing before you order one: when to put it on, how to measure, what to look for when choosing and how to look after it. We make it to measure in our Albox (Almería) workshop and we fit it or send it to you.

When do you put the winter cover on?

When the swimming season ends and the pool is going to go months without being used. Before covering it, leave the water clean and treated: the cover stops leaves, dust and dirt getting in and, by covering the water, slows the growth of algae, so in spring there is far less to treat.

Winter cover, debris cover, pool cover for the winter: and the solar cover?

Winter cover, debris cover and pool cover for the winter are the same item. The solar bubble cover is the summer cover: it warms the water and slows evaporation, and it is rolled up on a reel. And if you want to open and close the pool at the touch of a button, see the automatic slatted cover.

What to look for when choosing a winter cover

How the pool is measured

From stone to stone, along the outer edge of the coping. The cover adds 32 cm on each side to that measurement: 25 cm of overlap onto the stone, which is what holds it, and 7 cm of hem. The configurator asks for the measurements step by step and with a drawing, also if your pool has steps or a special shape. Is your pool 8 × 4 m? See the 8x4 pool cover price.

How it is fitted

It is stretched over the pool and anchored firmly to the edge with brass anchors. So that it does not bag, the tensioning strap crosses the pool and tensions the cover. It does not take a reel: it is a seasonal cover that goes on when you close the pool and comes off when you open it. If you are in the Almanzora area, the Levante or the Almería coast, we fit it ourselves; in the rest of the mainland we send it to you or you collect it from the workshop.

Looking after it during the winter

It is a seasonal protective cover: it is not a safety barrier or a surface to walk on.

Spare parts and accessories for the winter cover

In the shop you can buy separately what is used to fit and look after the cover: 40 cm elastic with end tubes, brass plug + stainless steel M8 screw, retractable expansion anchor, one-piece aluminium + stainless steel anchor, tensioning strap for winter cover and marine rope 8 mm (price per metre).

Frequently asked questions about the winter pool cover

When do you put the winter pool cover on?

When the swimming season ends and the pool is going to go months without being used. Before covering it, leave the water clean and treated: that way you open in spring with far less work.

Are a debris cover, a winter cover and a pool cover for the winter the same thing?

Yes: they are three names for the same item, a PVC sheet that is anchored to the edge of the pool during the winter. The solar bubble cover is something else: it is the summer cover, which warms the water and slows evaporation.

How do you measure the pool for the winter cover?

From stone to stone, along the outer edge of the coping. We calculate the cover with 32 cm more on each side on that measurement (25 cm of overlap onto the stone and 7 cm of hem), just as the configurator does.

What if my pool has steps or a special shape?

The configurator asks for the shape, the measurements and the steps one step at a time, with a drawing, and gives you the price for your pool straight away.

Can you walk on the winter cover?

No. It is a protective cover for the winter: it is not a surface to walk on or a child safety device.

How do you look after it and store it?

Every so often remove the leaves and the water that collect on top and check the anchors after a windstorm. In spring, clean it, let it dry and store it folded for the next winter.
